Te Karoro Karoro

Te Karoro Karoro

What if the stories were heard as loud as the seagulls scream?

For Inquiry our school did a big production called Te Karoro Karoro that most of the children took part in. The show took place in the hall with all of the windows and doors covered, there was a small stage and bright colourful lights. First the water and Tawhirimatea entered the stage. Then me, Tygah-Leah and Delanie came on the stage on the waka as waka warriors and met Eliza as the haka was sung. We walked around the stage looking at the animals and after they went to the front and showed their masks. Then we did a dance and sang Don’t Forget Your Roots in Maori. The other song is I Love Your Ways. I wore a dress. The dress was FREEZING and I was very nervous. The dates were the 27th-28th of September 2022.

The Titanic

Honesty Hope walked through the crowded precious rooms in the very Titanic. The beautiful chandeliers lit the room and James Horner played the graceful “Nearer, My God, To Thee”. The servant walked past and offered a glass of champagne. She took it and continued on, admiring the room, but suddenly, the ship started shaking and everyone fell to the floor screaming. “Honesty! We have hit an iceberg” her dad said limping over to her.  “We are sinking!” She was shocked, but the ship continued on. Suddenly water started entering the room, and everyone ran out, but the band kept playing. Miss Hope ran to the railing, not knowing what to do. They started to lock the men up and put the children and the woman on the life boats. “Father!” she cried as she was escorted onto the boat and pushed out into the cold life threatening ocean. Her father died and she got back to tell the tail.

About The Ear

Parts of the ear:

There are a lot of little parts to the ear that you cannot see, for example the eardrum, which the particles hit first. The eardrum vibrates when the sound has entered the ear. Then after the vibrations move on to the three small bones called the hammer, anvil and stirrup. Then the vibrations move to the cochlear, which kind of looks like a snail shell. After that it goes up the nerves and into the brain for processing.

How sound travels:

When something makes a sound it vibrates and causes air particles to knock each other and enter the ear. It kind of looks like a wave, which is why they call it a sound wave! Did you know that you can make a harmonica with only a few very simple steps! There is soft sounds, loud sounds and lots of different pitches.

Hearing sound:

If you hit a tuning fork and put it straight up you can see the sound waves on the water. Directing sound is quite easy, you can do it with cups and string, string and utensils, tubes and a lot more!

Monday Mashup

Last and this Monday we have been making an imovie for Monday Mashup. I worked with Sanchia and Dylan. We had to compromise on what type we wanted to do. This is my imovie.

Te Ari Ora

On Monday an awesome team called Te Ari Ora came to our school to teach us excellent tricks with a staff and how to use them. Te Ari Ora means Fire Dancing Programme. They are a group of people who include Josh and Chris. They did an AMAZING demonstration of the fire dancing and next Monday they are coming to our school between 6pm and 7pm to let us have a go! They are a very talented group of people and will inspire many kids and adults. Kei runga noa atu koe!

Surroundings

                                Surroundings

The kindhearted Easla-Rose was a beautiful girl with black hair and bright blue eyes, her lashes are long and black, she is 15 years old and is wearing a white crop top and jean shorts. She was packing the car and getting ready with her 10 year old considerate brother, Raenan, he was very scared of everything, he had orange hair, freckles and blue eyes. They were going to the absolutely stunning cromwell! “Don’t worry Raenan, everything is going to be okay!” Easla-Rose tried to calm him down, but it didn’t help! He was absolutely terrified! There was a lot of rain which has caused flooding. They got in the car and set off. Raenan was crying the whole way! But it was beautiful!

We weren’t that far from home and we only got about 10 minutes through the drive when we heard the cold rain pounding on our car like stones! “Speed up!” their giant, and quite scary dad yelled. She saw that the rain had risen taller than the houses! But then she noticed that it had stopped, like a humongous wall!?

Holes Chapter 8-15

On my last Holes post, I made a summary about Stanley’s unfortunate situation where he had to go to camp green lake., that was about chapters 1-7. Today I am answering questions about chapters 8-14.

  1. Do you think Caveman is a good nickname for Stanley? Why? Did he like it?                                  Yes, he liked it because it means he is part of the group.
  2. Do you think it is wise for Stanley to lie to his mother about camp?                                                          I think so because that means she won’t be worried.
  3. What would you do if you were in his situation? Why?                                                                                    I would stay away from people and mind my own business
  4. Why do the boys always line up for water in the same order?                                                                       Because there is certain people who is the boss and leader.
  5. What’s the significance to this order?                                                                                                               The bosses of the groups always get the water first.
  6. Why is Mr Pendanski asking the boys what they want to do with their life?                                             Because he knows they have messed up and he wants to help.
  7. Mr Pendanski tells Stanley, “You messed up your life, and it’s up to you to fix it.” Do you agree with this?                                                                                                                                                                   No, because he did not mess up his life and he was really not guilty for his crime.
  8. What did Stanley find?                                                                                                                                          He found a tube that has a little engraving of a heart and the letters K M.
  9. What does X-Ray ask Stanley to do?                                                                                                                 Give X-Ray the tube so X-Ray can have the day off.
  10. Why does Stanley agree to this?                                                                                                                         So Stanley can be on X-Rays good side.
  11. What would you have done?                                                                                                                                I would have said yes because I also would want him to like me.
  12. Were you surprised to discover that the Warden is a woman?                                                                    Yes because normally they are men.
  13. What else do you find out about the Warden in this chapter?                                                                     She likes to say ‘excuse me’ a lot, she is absolutely beautiful, she is good at making her point and she likes to watch them.
  14. Do you think Zigzag and the other campers are correct in believing that the Warden is always watching them, or are they just being paranoid?                                                                                            I think that the only way she would know that he was caveman was if she was watching them.
  15. What do you think it’s like being sent to Camp Green Lake? Do you think it will help the kids be better people in the future? Explain?                                                                                                               I think that it would be sad to go to Camp Green Lake because you leave your parents for over a year and I think that it would make them better kids in the future because now they know their consequences.

My Dream Job

After I finished the last Holes post, I needed to do a creation. The create I chose told me that I had to say what I wanted to be when I was older.

Māori Wayfinders

In Term 2 we began learning local stories and how they are communicated. We went on three trips around New Brighton and spent time learning stories of New Brighton, Christchurch and Aotearoa. We then chose a topic to investigate further. I chose to look at Māori Way finders and their stories.

I began learning about the stories of Māori wayfinders.

I asked three questions to guide my inquiry. They were:

  •  Were there other ways to find their way?
  • How did they know which star to follow?
  • How did they know how to use the stars?

I found my information from different sources including the movie Moana, Mātauranga, and TEDed.

The inquiry skills I used were note taking, interviewing and summarizing.

The most interesting thing I found out was that wayfinders use the clouds to find their way.

Create

For my creation I chose to make an imovie because I really enjoy making them.

I worked with Malachi and Rangi.

We started by listing the things we needed.

Then we made our script.

Next we made the paper with the stars.

Finally we started, and finished the filming.

What resources I used for my inquiry was the boat in the playground, an ipad, a piece of paper and 3 vivids.

Share

This is my imovie, sharing my learning about Māori Way finders and their stories

It took me 4 sections to finish.

And I made an extra slideshow by myself.

Summary Of Holes Chapter 1-7

Holes

The book

Summary from chapter 1-7

Stanley Yelnats is a kid who has a great great grandfather who made every boy have a curse. Stanley was accused of stealing over $5000 sports shoes that actually weren’t stolen from him and were falling from the sky. He was arrested and got a choice at court to either go to jail or camp green lake. He chose Camp Green Lake, a place that is supposed to improve him by digging holes, where he will meet some strange people and dig some deep holes, 5 feet long and five feet deep.

  1. Why does Stanley go to Camp Green Lake? Have you ever been accused on something you didn’t do? He was accused to ‘stealing sports shoes’ and yes, I was accused of swearing.
  2. Do you think it’s true that digging holes can turn a bad person into a good one? What’s something unpleasant that you have done before?   I think that it can help because they experience what it would be like if you didn’t have everything you wanted. I called someone’s hair grey.
  3. The author says that a good inventor needs to have intelligence, perseverance and luck. Do you agree? Explain your answer. I agree because you do of course need to be intelligent because you can’t make inventions not knowing what 1+1 is and you can’t make something and if it gets hard give up. You need luck because you need the invention to work.
  4. Why does Stanley’s great-great Grandfather have a curse on him? Do you believe in curses? Stanley’s great great grandfather was supposed to carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain but he did not. I don’t believe in curses.
  5. Why do you think the boys prefer to be called by their nicknames at Camp Green Lake? Do you have a nickname? What is it? I think that they like nicknames because it shows that they are in a group. I have many nicknames, such as Addy, Adidas, Dorito and Addiso
  6. Stanley feels like he is holding ‘destiny’s shoes’. Do you believe there is such a thing as destiny? Explain. Yes, everything happens for a reason and those things change your future.
  7. Based on what you have read so far, do you think Stanley has made the right choice in coming to Camp Green Lake? Why? I think that going to Camp Green Lake was a good idea because he made good friends, he had a story to tell after, and he would be proud of digging so many holes.
  8. Stanley feels proud of his first hole when it is finished. Why? Describe a time when you felt proud? Stanley felt proud because he finished something that was incredibly hard. I felt proud when I finished my picture for the Tawhirimatea quilt.
  9. What do you think of the story so far? What do you think will happen next? He might make friends with some of them.

The meanings of the following words:

Sentence containing desolate: “Come on, don’t be so desolate!”

Excavated means that you are going to do anything with a shovel.
