Elsie Locke

Elsie Locke

1912-2001

Elsie Locke was an author to many brilliant books, such as Two Peoples, One Land and The Runaway Settlers, which was her most successful book. But she wasn’t always an author, she fought for women’s rights, the environment, peace, and many more.

In the 1940’s, she spent a long 2 years in hospital with spinal tuberculosis, but that didn’t stop her! She spent most of her time making poems, magazine articles and radio talks. Elsie was always trying to make New Zealand a better place.

She made a really good impression. School journal writer David Hill said: “I’m 6 feet tall. Elsie is … well, rather less than 6 feet tall. So how come when we meet, I always look up to her?” He said this because not only did she fight for herself, she fought everyone!
