Summary Of Holes Chapter 1-7

Holes

The book

Summary from chapter 1-7

Stanley Yelnats is a kid who has a great great grandfather who made every boy have a curse. Stanley was accused of stealing over $5000 sports shoes that actually weren’t stolen from him and were falling from the sky. He was arrested and got a choice at court to either go to jail or camp green lake. He chose Camp Green Lake, a place that is supposed to improve him by digging holes, where he will meet some strange people and dig some deep holes, 5 feet long and five feet deep.

  1. Why does Stanley go to Camp Green Lake? Have you ever been accused on something you didn’t do? He was accused to ‘stealing sports shoes’ and yes, I was accused of swearing.
  2. Do you think it’s true that digging holes can turn a bad person into a good one? What’s something unpleasant that you have done before?   I think that it can help because they experience what it would be like if you didn’t have everything you wanted. I called someone’s hair grey.
  3. The author says that a good inventor needs to have intelligence, perseverance and luck. Do you agree? Explain your answer. I agree because you do of course need to be intelligent because you can’t make inventions not knowing what 1+1 is and you can’t make something and if it gets hard give up. You need luck because you need the invention to work.
  4. Why does Stanley’s great-great Grandfather have a curse on him? Do you believe in curses? Stanley’s great great grandfather was supposed to carry Madame Zeroni up the mountain but he did not. I don’t believe in curses.
  5. Why do you think the boys prefer to be called by their nicknames at Camp Green Lake? Do you have a nickname? What is it? I think that they like nicknames because it shows that they are in a group. I have many nicknames, such as Addy, Adidas, Dorito and Addiso
  6. Stanley feels like he is holding ‘destiny’s shoes’. Do you believe there is such a thing as destiny? Explain. Yes, everything happens for a reason and those things change your future.
  7. Based on what you have read so far, do you think Stanley has made the right choice in coming to Camp Green Lake? Why? I think that going to Camp Green Lake was a good idea because he made good friends, he had a story to tell after, and he would be proud of digging so many holes.
  8. Stanley feels proud of his first hole when it is finished. Why? Describe a time when you felt proud? Stanley felt proud because he finished something that was incredibly hard. I felt proud when I finished my picture for the Tawhirimatea quilt.
  9. What do you think of the story so far? What do you think will happen next? He might make friends with some of them.

Holes

This week we have been learning about the book holes, this is what I think it will be like.

Māori Wayfinders

Over the past few weeks, I have chosen a theme and some questions for Inquiry. The theme I chose was Māori wayfinders, which were people who use the stars for navigation. The 3 questions I chose were, were there any other ways to navigate? How did they know which stars to follow? And how did they know how to use the stars? The main website I used was Matauranga, How Did They Find Their Way.

What’s a question you think I should find out?
